International Student Testimonial : Dennis Ong

International Student Testimonial : Dennis Ong

Hi my name is Dennis. I am a computer
science major and I’m from Malaysia. I wanted to study in the United States
because they are the leading pioneers in the IT … they have a lot of good
opportunities with amazing companies –like Apple, Google, even Netflix, Amazon–
that they are leading the world in terms of the technology advancements,
software and hardware. One of the primary reasons I chose Cal State East Bay is because of they are one of the closest to Silicon Valley and also due to the
affordability I think they have a really great balance between affordability and the quality of the educations. Being an international student
in Cal State East Bay, I think it’s a very smooth transition. There’s a lot of staff and faculties and even students that assists me in transitioning from my home country to Cal State East Bay. I get support from
professors. Even though I ask questions that are not really related with my
course but it’s still major, within my major for example I ask Professor David Yang “hey, I need some guidance regarding this intern interview” even though it’s completely out of syllabus and he still takes his time to assist me
in different ways, So currently I’m working two jobs on campus. the first one
I work for International Department where I’m a student assistant doing
multiple administrative duties, front-desk duties… And second I’m also working
for Dr. Eric Haas where I’m helping him with data analytics… we take data from
multiple surveys across the countries and I have to clean up the data to make
using the data so that we can make the best policymaking regarding Cal States. So I also receive scholarships for a research project that I’m I’m doing right now from the Cal State research program which they give me fundings to
do my projects and I’ll be presenting my project and research at the Cal State
East Bay research symposium. I think to my home country friends that they want to study computer science and they want to get into Silicon Valley area, they can… I feel like Cal State East Bay is a very underrated gem as Cal State East Bay is the advantage is we are pretty small to medium sized classroom and they should take a look at Cal State East Bay.
